Jack Mc's Post on Thursday, 13 August 2015

Today it was maths week and we had to find all the prime numbers up to 100. First we crossed out all the even numbers apart from two. Then we crossed out all the answers to the three times tables. After that we crossed out all the answers to the five times tables, then the six times tables. We kept on crossing out answers to the times tables until there were only 25 numbers left. These we figured must have been the prime numbers up to 100.

Emma's Post on Thursday, 2 July 2015

Talia and Emma have been doing a project for Young Innovators. What we have done is the library. The books that are on it keep on coming off so we thought that we could go to Mitre 10. We looked and see if there were any things that we could do that would help us keep the books up. When we got there we saw some bungy string and that's what we ended up using. It worked perfectly.

I found a problem for Young innovators and it was feeding my cat. Look at the picture to see what I did.
Toby's Post on Thursday, 2 July 2015

At Young Innovators for my problem is that people keep standing up at lunchtime. So I made a poster for my problem. I hope it'll work at lunchtime.
George's Post on Thursday, 2 July 2015

We have been making things to solve problems around the school and I have been making a sign for the tennis court to say when it is scooter day and tennis days. We made the sign because people were fighting over the tennis court. We made the sign and are going to put it up in Term Four because people can't play tennis because the nets aren't up so when it is Term Four we are going to put it up.

On Friday the 26th of June, Room 12 made some art for aurora Australis. We made a background which were the aurora Australis lights and we made a foreground which consisted of some mountains in the back and an everyday object in front of the mountains which appeared bigger because they were closer.

Our group had Talia , Angela and Nick in it and we did a experiment for Young Innovators. We also had to work as a team, what we did was get a box fill it up halfway with newspaper and wrapped the egg inside it and we finished up with filling it up with newspaper and the egg didn't break so we were happy. We had to do it at the playground 😅

The Three Little Pigs
Today the Young Leaders were away so we had a Three Little Pigs day. We looked at different versions of the story, wrote or own and then tried to build our own houses that could withstand the air from a hairdryer. We have some pictures of us making our houses.
Below is a slideshow of some of our learning. It includes different versions of the story, some video links to funny versions, our versions of the three little pigs that we wrote and the rules to our challenge of building our own house.

Message to my Neighbour
Last week we had the problem below in our homework. Today in class we tried to make them with interesting results.
Our ideas were:
Cups and string
Did it work?
A little bit but its not very reliable. What problems did we have?
The string got tangled very often.
It has to be very quiet and the string needs to be very tight. What would we change next time?
Use a hose.
Cups and hose
Did it work?
Yes quite well. What problems did we have?
The hose was short.
Soft voices didn't travel as well. What would we change next time?
Make a bigger speaker or use bigger cups.
Pulleys and string
Did it work?
Yes What problems did we have?
String gets tangled. What would we change next time?
Make the string tighter.
Strong anchor points.
Work on the stability.
Paper planes
Did it work?
No (but one out of three got close) What problems did we have?
They are hard to throw accurately.
They would have trouble in the wind and rain.
What would we change next time?
Try and make more accurate planes.
Make them bigger so they can glide better.
Glue stick sliding on string
Did it work?
Yes but only over a short distance.
What problems did we have?
It gets stuck in the middle.
What would we change next time?
Work out a way to get it higher.
White board pens on windows
Did it work?
Yes it worked.
What problems did we have?
You have to write backwards.
You could not see the black whiteboard marker from a distance because it was not very clear. So I had to put a piece of paper behind the words so you could see it more clearly.
What would we change next time?
Use proper window markers to see if it make a difference.
As a class we think the pens on the windows is a good solution to the problem and it is pretty cheap and easy to set up.
We think the hose and cups is also a good idea but a little harder to set up. If you had the hose buried so it was permanently set up it would be an easy solution to use.
Your best friend lives in the house next door to you. Your bedroom window looks out on theirs. You want to be able to get messages to each other without waking up your parents.
Design a system or machine to get messages to each other.
P.S. Your parents don’t let you take electronic devices to bed with you.Our ideas were:

Boys festival
Boys festival is celebrated on May 5th in Japan it is called "tango no sekku". It's been celebrated for over a milennium. Originally it was celebrated in the house of warriors. It celebrated boys cousage and determination. Many of the symbols of this day are about having a character of a warrior. Eventually this day became important for all of the households with boys.

After WWII, boys festival became toned down. This holiday officially became known as children's day Japanese call it Kodomo no hi. It's supposed to be a day to celebrate the health and happiness of all children but many people still see it as boys festival

Large carp wind socks called koinobori, are displayed outside houses of families with boys. There's one windsock for each boy in the house.
The carp is a symbol of tango no sekku, because carp are considered strong and determined. They're able to swim upstream against the flow of the water. This is a day for families to celebrate their sons strength and and character.
Warrior dolls and helmets, armor and swords are also displayed in houses with boys.
The symbolic flower of tango no sekku is a type of iris called shobu. The shobu has long leaves that resemble swords. Boys traditionally take shobu baths on this day. The shobu is so important for this day that sometimes the festival is called shobu no sekku or iris festival.
One of the traditional food eaten is kashiwa mochi. It's a rice cake steamed with sweet beans and wrapped in an oak leaf. Another traditional food eaten is chimaki, which is rice wrapped in bamboo leaves.
