Our Last Day of School

All our memories of the past years of school came flooding back as though they were yesterday. Some of them good and some of them bad but all of them interesting.  We hope future classes enjoy the school. Enjoy it, it goes really fast!   Look after our blog.

Walking into the classroom on our last day of primary school we realise that we have three tests.  Oh No!  This was the spelling test.  Can you work it out?

Amazing Race

"Go"! On Tuesday the 2nd day of camp, we set out on an Amazing Race around Dunedin. The Amazing Race involved a lot of running and catching busses.  To brighten up Dunedin we gave out some balloons. We struggled to run up steepest street in the world, feed ducks at the park and did some teaming up. The McChickens won pride but winning isn't everything. There was so much fun to be had on that bright Dunedin.  By Ellie, Sam, Olivia and Esther

Museum

The last activity we did on camp was to go to the Otago Museum. We meet up with the other groups in the entryway. Kate was our day leader. she told us to bring our stuff up to the Discovery Pad. We were so excited that we rushed down the stairs to the discovery world and we hung out down there for 45 minutes after we had done some hands on experiments about vitamin C and what drinks had the most of it out of Broccoli Juice, Lettuce Juice, Orange Juice, Apple Juice and Lemonade. We all went up to the discovery pad again to do some more hands on experiments like testing the D.N.A in a banana, testing for sugar in different types of drinks and cereal. We also did an experiment on bread, rice and lettuce. We had to pore a special scientific liquid on it. Once we had done that we went back to the vitamin C experiments. About 5:00 o'clock we had two different ladies call Alisha and Mel they were our night time watchers. The first activity we did around the museum was looking and learning about what the did to royal Egyptians. we each created a death mask and then it was time to go to bed. In the morning we went to see the butterflies and then it was time to go to Te Anau.

Strike Shoot Splash

STRIKE, on the first night of camp we went to ten pin bowling.  We all started off thinking it was easy and we would beat the parents but all of us were wrong.  Strike after miss after spare the parents points grew and ours did too.  The night went on with lots of strikes and misses.  Anna took out a victory with a whopping 143 points.  After our loss we went back to camp.

On the second night of camp we went to lazer strike to shoot our teacher and the parents. We started off with lots of teams. We ran around shooting every one we saw. Every round we changed teams. We had 6 rounds and Patrick Larrivee won three of them.  It was real good fun.

On the last day of camp we went to Moana pool to swim.  When we all  got into our togs we speed walked to the giant kids pool.  We all splashed in the pool and swam in the lazy river.  Then a man came and told us the water slides and diving boards were open.  We played for ages then after a while Mr Excell told us to get out and get dressed.

The Aquarium

While we were on camp in Dunedin we went to the Otago university Aquarium.  Were Josie and Steve showed us around we got to touch and see all these different things such as star Fish, Sea Anemones, Crabs, Fish, Coral, Sea Slugs and and sea cucumbers.  We also went in a submarine we went to the very bottom of the sea and saw lots of different creatures.  But the most memorable moment was dissecting the Spiky Dog Shark.  Crazy Steve decided that it would be funny to freak all of us out by biting the Sharks skin to show us how strong the skin was.  It was good to try something different even though not everyone wanted to do that.  We all had lots of fun and if we had the opportunity to go back we would!

Art Gallery

The Art Gallery
On Thursday the 4th of December Room 12 went to the Art Gallery in Dunedin.
A man named John showed us around and told us about some of the paintings like what they mean and where they come from.
After that he took us to an art room where we made 3D fruit art.
Next we had lunch and watched some short films about Mr Bean,Wallace and Grommit and a couple of old adds.
We had lots of fun at the Art Gallery and hope we could go again soon.

Enviro Schools Update

The Green Thumbs Environmental team has been working on getting our Environment Silver Award. We are being interviewed on Tuesday the 11th of November. We helped host the Te Anau Environment Hui. It was such an amazing experience and we enjoyed it so much. We hope we can do it again very soon. Mark, Pat and Amy from Environment Southland helped us a lot throughout all our years being an Enviro School and are so proud of our amazing accomplishments as an Enviro School. We are proud of our fun times as the amazing Enviro School that we are. Hopefully we can continue being an Enviro School and we hope we will get our Silver Enviro School award. Then later on we hope to achieve the achievement of the Gold Enviro School award.

Enviro Schools Hui

On Thursday the 23rd of October all the Enviro schools came to Te Anau for a Hui. First of all Kids Restore the Kepler did a speech, secondly we split up in our groups for a tour of the bird park. In the duck enclosure there were two goose nests with eggs. Then we went to see the kaka. The kaka eats kowhai leaves. After that we jumped into the cars and went to the Kepler track. At the track we did all sorts of fun activities like the blind game when a buddy guides you to a tree blindfolded and then you have to find it again with no blindfold. Then we learnt to use a tracking transmitter and find birds. We meet Billy the stoat again and set off a stoat trap. Then we walked deeper down then track to a huge tree. We got back to the car park and did some trading. We traded honey for a bird nesting box and Snapdragons for a corrugated iron bird. We finished and everyone went home.  It was a very enjoyable day. We are looking forward to the next hui.

Technology Chalenge

On Thursday the 23rd, the Te Anau technology group went down to Waianawa School. The group is made up of Lydia, Lindsay, Jessica Barnes and William Hamilton. We all woke up bright and early and we meet Mrs Meffan outside the School office. When we arrived there we walked into the Waianawa hall. Inside were 24 1 meter squared 2D boxes. Our box number was number 15. For our first challenge scenario someone had fallen off a 4meter cliff and you had to make a contraption that would drop the Medicine. The challenge was called dropping the goods. We used an egg instead of medicine because an egg is also very fragile. Our parachute was amazing when we dropped it off the playground fort but on the day when we dropped it it didn't go as well as we hoped KA SPLAT!!!. Between the 2nd and the 3rd challenge we got our snacks out and enjoyed 20minutes free time to relax. Our 2nd challenge was the light house. The scenario was the light in the light house had been busted and there was a huge crack in the lighthouse so we had to rebuild it. We used newspaper and other stuff to recreate our version of a lighthouse. We had 1 minute to strategise what we were going to create then we got to work building the best lighthouse ever. We got called up to the stage to assemble the light together in under 1 minute. The judges walked around and measured our lighthouse's height and the structure/safety of our lighthouse. Our 3rd and final challenge the hardest of them all also a mystery!!!! The senareo was there had just been an earthquake and a hard log had fallen on someone and their phone had flown 6 meters behind her. Her feet are trapped so she can't look behind. We had to make a contraption that will retrieve here phone so she call for help. We had a really great time and wish we could go again. We didn't get any prizes but it was still worth the trip and experience. A big thanks to Mrs Meffon who trained us to be as great as we are.

Jumping Pillow

Today we were lucky enough to get invited to the camping ground across the road to try out their new 'Jumping Pillow'.  It was great fun. We now want one at school!

Vader the Rabbit

I brought my rabbit 'Vader' in today for my Korero Mai. I was on 'Introducing'.  Vader usually stays in his cage but today he came to school.  Everyone patted Vader.  Some people held him.  He is cute and soft. His ears go floppy and up.

Snow and Billy

You know those predators that have been threatening the Kepler track? Well.... on the 1st of September Mrs Ball brought Snow and Billy to school.  By now you probably thinking who Snow and Billy really are? Snow is a ferret and Billy is a stoat.  Snow is cute and active but Billy he can get so scared he could jump out of his coat.

They came to school in a glass cage so they could not get out. There was also a piece of glass between them so they can not fight, but if they did, who do you think will win?

It was our spring cleanup for the school. We had lots of fun doing are jobs and we wish we could do it again.
