Rap - Unzel

On the 9th of June 2014 NZ Playhouse came to present a show to Te Anau School called Rap-Unzel.  This was the same company who performed The Big Sad Wolf last year.  It followed the story of Rapunzel but they used New Zealand’s got talent and turned it into Far Far Aways got talent to make it fun. There were three 21 year olds that performed for us 2 boys and 1 girl. They had to audition to get the part they wanted. Simon Cow was one of the character’s names.  We think he was the funniest.

Our Hangi

Three weeks ago Room 12 began digging our school hangi for our school topic. Once our hangi is dug we will use it for our school hangi feast on Friday the 28th of June 2014. The school is preparing the food on Wednesday the 26th of June. We light the fire at 4am in the morning. We will be singing some traditional Maori songs. The parents can walk around the classes and see our Matariki projects that we’ve been doing.

Southland Cross Country

Ready steady GO! On Friday the 13th of June 2014 6 children from our school went down to Southland Cross Country including Jessica Molloy, Mitchell Flynn, Thomas Larrivee, Noah Cockburn, Esther Cole and Jake Tither. The people from our class got these placings Esther got 50th/76, Jessica got 36th/76, Jake got 33rd/76 and Thomas got 22nd/76. Mitchel from Room 5 got 42nd and Noah from Room 6 got 41st.
On the track it was very muddy, Esther even lost her shoe and she never found it. You got used to it though.  There was only one big hill, lots of mud holes and there were bark chips, also hay bales to run over. This day would not have been possible without Mrs Taylor and all the parents that provided transport. Thank You, you made the Cross Country a great success and you made the day for lots of speedy children.

Story Tellers

A few weeks ago we had 2 story tellers come to our school and share some amazing stories with us.
One of the ladies was from Scotland and the other was from the USA.
The lady from Scotland told us 2 stories, one about a traveler who cut off a frozen mans feet for his boots and then tricked 2 old people out of their home because they were mean and nasty and then the man with no feet came and knocked on his door and gave him the fright of his life.
And her second story was about the creation of the fridge when a queen froze a wizard and put him in a cupboard and it stayed cold forever.
The other lady told us one story about a tribe who stopped caring and a man they called the Ancient One.  The Ancient One did care and one morning when he went to harvest his crops the kids had beat him there and had a food fight the man was furious but didn’t say anything he just went over and started planting seeds for a new crop and soon all of the kids joined in and after that they all liked him and cared.
We all liked the story tellers and hope they come again.

Takahe Visit

Takahe visit

On the 12th of June 4 students of Te Anau School went up to the Burwood Takahe breeding center to visit the school’s adopted Takahe called Murchison.

When we got to Burwood we had to climb an awkward ladder to get in to the enclosure.

At Burwood there are about 33 Takahe that is about 11.5% of the worlds Takahe population.

Unfortunately we didn’t get to see Murchison but we saw a lot of Takahe the same age as him so we sort of know what he looks like.

We helped catch takahe by blocking the exits when we had finally cornered the Takahe the DOC specialists weigh them by their legs. Also looking for good blood tip feathers so they can figure out which gender they are.

Rudd Kienpaste

Ahh spider. Last week Rudd Klienpaste came into Te Anau school to tell us about spiders. He told us about and how spiders make a nest and how they protect it. We learned some interesting facts. He also showed us a tea tree that looked dead but was actually very healthy. Tiny bugs feed on it, which made a small circle of life. At the end before he left he asked a special guest to come up and hold the spider. That special guest was Todd who looked very scared but the scariest thing was that everyone was screaming.
