Year Six Camp

Ring ring the bell rang for class. The year Sixes were off to Dundien to start there camp. After shopping they arrived at the Scout Camp. During the week we did lots of interesting things, some of these are to follow.

Year 6 Camp: Games And Activities

Last week the year 6’s went to Dunedin for their camp.  On the camp they did activities with the parents, Mr. Excell and Mrs. Fuller at Waiora Scout Camp.
Some of the activities were:
Kick the can, the obstacle course and a very awesome campfire that almost everyone took part in.
When I took part, I did some modeling with Georgia Mitchell and Alicia Duncun. It was a better version of N.Z got talent! It was called Year 6’s have talent! It was so awesome!
Kick the can was the first game that we did on the camp. It was very enjoyable! For the obstacle course, there were so many extraordinary obstacles we had to jump over, go under or even climb into! I came 5th overall with a time of 2:05 minutes. Anyway, the year 6’s loved the camp! Thanks to everyone who helped make the trip! We couldn’t have done it without you!

On the second night all the year sixes went out to a movie then to dessert at the Lone Star we all left from the scout camp to the movie theatre to watch a movie Hotel Pennsylvania the movie was about a hotel for monsters so they could get away from humans for a while. And Dracula owned the hotel and his wanted to go into the world but Dracula wouldn’t let her if you want to see what happens you’ll have to go and see it. After after we all went to the Lone Star for desert the options were chocolate surprise Pavlova or just vanilla after we all went back to camp to go to sleep.

BALDWIN STREET
The year sixes of Te Anau School went to Dunedin for the week. Last Thursday we walked up Baldwin Street. Once everyone was there we all walked up Baldwin Street. Some people found it very easy and others found it quit hard. Once everyone was up the top all of the children went together to get a group picture.  We all looked around for a bit. Dave rolled down some Jaffa’s some went all the way and some didn’t. Off we went back down everyone found the walk down so easy and when we were nearly at the bottom some children ran the rest. Once we got to the bottom everyone started driving off to the Museum!

Celebration

Celebration
On the 30th November 3 days ago, at Te Anau School in Room 11 we had a Celebration.
We started off with singing a happy birthday to Nash, we also had a little treat with cupcakes with really extremely sweet icing.
All of us had a choice out of green and pink icing; it was oozing down your throat like a slimy snake.
We got two lollies to go on your own cupcake or cupcakes you get one big cupcake or two little ones everyone went for the small because they were adorable.
The butter icing was the best icing in the world.
Once we all finished our yummy cupcakes we all had a game of volleyball, the girls one of course we all had and awesome time eating our scrumptious cupcakes that Mrs. Foote made.

Mapping

Last week Mrs Foote was teaching the year 5’s. For Maths we did mapping , it was all based on new Zealand. We Had to measure the distance   from place to place example Kaitaia to Auckland the answers are 324km by road,300km by air as the crow flies,24km difference. Marking took forever because Mrs Foote had to measure on her map and then calculate it. Some of us found it easy and some found it hard.

My Trip to Dunedin

My trip to Dunedin

Last week I, April Clarke went on a trip to Dunedin with my family for a science course.
On the way I stopped at my grandparents in Invercargill and stayed the night there in me and my sister’ room which is also the office.
The next day we set off for Dunedin and went straight to the Adrian motel and unpacked our bags as soon as possible and my brothers went to get a movie.
We had the same apartment as we had last time that we were in Dunedin, the beds there are really comfy and cosy!
We went to the beach twice and had so much fun letting the waves crash through our legs but there was a undertow so we came out after a while, we also went to Moana pool twice and I loved the hydro slide and the swirl pool and we had races and it was so fun!

Alyssa's Korero Mai

CINDERELLA
Every week 1 or 2 people tell the class a once upon a time story for the Korero Mai. This week Alyssa did one based on Cinderella here is the story.
Once upon a time...ok, you know how it goes. Let's just skip to the good part.....

"I'll never get to go to the ball!" cried Cinderella.
"Yes you will my child." said the Fairy Godmother as she suddenly materialized in front of Cinderella.
"Oh!" Cinderella exclaimed looking up in surprise. "Who are you?"
"I'm your Fairy Godmother." she replied.
"I didn't know I had one." said Cinderella.
"Well you do, and I'm here to gaurantee that you get to that ball." said the Fairy Godmother, "But I can only grant one wish."
"Wow! If I wish to attend the ball then I'll need a dress- the most beautiful in the land of course! And shoes to match-nothing but the finest! Oh, and I'll need accessories!"
Cinderella continued her long list of wishes to herself while her Fairy Godmother looked on incredulously. Finally reaching the end of her list, Cinderella looked up in time to catch her Fairy Godmother casting a spell.
"Bibidi-bobidi-boo!" she cried, and ball attire magically appeared on Cinderella.
"You mean all I get is this passé gown and these cheap glass slippers?!" exclaimed Cinderella, "I wanted the finest things possible!"

What are you doing here?! Your stories finished; this is Cinderella's story!

I came here to see if the Fairy Godmother can change me ack! PLease Fairy Godmother, please help me!" said the very unhappy fisherman/woman.
"Well, I think you'll appreciate my skills more than this ungrateful child, so I'll give you one wish." replied the Fairy Godmother.
"Oh thank you Fairy Godmother! I wish to be a man again!" cried the fisherman/woman. He waited excitedly as the Fairy Godmother cast the spell.
"Bibidi-bobidi-boobless!" she cried and poof! The fisherman/woman turned back into a man.

***THE END***

"That is NOT the end!" said Cinderella. "What about me and my problem?! How am I going to get to the ball now?"
"Oh bibidi-bobidi-boo-hoo." said the Fairy Godmother, "Here's thirty-five cents. Go call someone who cares."

Here are some comments from room12

Taylor thought- it was funny and was well written.

Hunting's in the Blood

I went with my dad to set a pig trap. We caught three baby pigs, a sow and one boar we kept the sow and the babies and the boar.  We are waiting until they grow up and let them go so we can hunt more pigs.  We went hunting last night we shot a boar it was the boar we let go.  It had grown from the last time I saw it.  It was 300 pounds with the guts in!
Last night we caught a hawk. Dad had to grab the hawk up by its wing. He chucked it out of the pig trap it collided in to the trees and then flew away.

The Bug Man

Bug man comes to Te Anau School

On the 3rd of August, Ruud Kleinpaste (The Bug man) came to Te Anau School, to talk to us about bugs and how they help the world.
First we started off with singing the finale song of the Lorax Production.
He started talking about poo, and without bugs, we’d be covered in it.
After that he took out his weta, Dorothy. He explained how a female has a type of tube on their bottom which helped them lay eggs. Weta have special sensors on their rear-end which helps them tell the weather.
We started with the questions. We found out that when he was younger, he was more of a birdman. His fascination started with bugs, when he was researching about the birds food chain.

After that Ruud came to our Enviro Groups to see what we have been doing.

Korero Mai - Punchline

Room 12’s Korero Mai, Punchline.

There is a roster in our class that tells you when and what you’re on.

Korero Mai is an oral language program that helps us with confidence of speaking in front of an audience and you get marked out of 10.  5 for organization and 5 for presentation.

Punch line is one of the options we have to do.  It iswhen we tell jokes.

In Week 8 Jacob Robertson did punch line. Here are 2 of his jokes.

1.       Why does a flamingo lift up one leg?

Because if he lifted up both he would fall over!

2.       Did you hear about the little boy who got named after his father?

They called him Dad!

Comments:

Lily Campbell thinks Jacob’s jokes were funny but he did stumble.

Lily K-T thinks that Jacob’s jokes were good and funny.

Matiu thinks that Jacob’s jokes were awesome.

Rylie thinks they were cool.

Picasso Art

Picasso Art
In the past few weeks we have been learning about Picasso Art. Picasso’s most famous picture is the Guernica.
Picasso does cubism and sculpture. He has had the art talent ever since he was a young child.

Our paintings that we painted were one side from the front of the face and one from the side of the face. We used contrast colors with pastel with bright colors. We have put a lovely background. Nash has put a bright orange background for the awesome sailor that he has made like Picasso’s.  Jack’s has a wonderful and different face with an amazing background.

Here are some of our paintings,

This is Nash’s Picasso art.

Can we Change how Water Acts?

Can we change how water acts?

In Room 12 we tried to see if we could change when water freezes.  To do this we froze water with different things added.

First we tried to freeze fresh water, water with salt and water with sugar.

We added 1 cup of salt to 800ml of water.  We also added 1 cup of sugar to another 800ml of water.  The last one was just fresh water.

We poured this water into muffin tins to freeze.  We then put these in the freezer overnight.  The next day when we checked them the salt water one hadn’t frozen (there were a few ice crystals though) – WE HAD CHANGED HOW WATER ACTS!!!
This is one of the crystals that formed in the salt water.  The rest of the water didn’t freeze.

We then tried to freeze some of our salt water from Colac Bay.  This water froze.

Next we wanted to melt our ice cubes to see which ones melted first.

We sat three ice cubes of each kind in containers and left them to melt.  Every half an hour we looked at our ice cubes and took photos so that we could remember what had happened.  At the beginning it looked like they were all melting at the same speed.  After about an hour though it was clear that the fresh water one was melting the slowest and the sugar water one was melting the fastest.

From this experiment we have found that yes we have changed how water acts.  If you add salt or sugar to water it will take longer for them to freeze and also it they will melt quicker.

This means that if you add salt or sugar you can lower the freezing point to below zero.  This explains why in some countries they put salt on their roads to stop them freezing.

The pictures below show our ice cubes after one and a half hours of melting.

  Fresh Water

Salt Water (from Colac Bay 2 tablespoons of salt to 1 litre of water)

Sugar Water (1 cup of sugar to 800ml water)

Thursday 29 March 2012

On Tuesday 27th March the Senior Syndicate went to Colac Bay to the Takutai o Te Titi Marae.  We were welcomed on with a powhiri then took part in four different cultural activities.

The children made poi and anchor lines, learnt the ukelele, took a look at the local wetland 'O Koura', and listened to a local legend then drew chalk pictures.

The local people of Colac Bay were really welcoming and Colac Bay turned on a stunning day.  Both our students and parents learnt loads throughout the day.

A huge thanks to all the parent helpers, we couldn't have done this trip without you!!

We hope to repeat this trip in three years time.
